As Seen In Time Out
Each new summer brings with it a new set of annual blockbuster hits. These products of Hollywood bombard us with images intended to trick us into suspending our disbelief. Approximately two hours and 15 dollars later, are we different than before we sat ourselves down in front of the silver screen? Destination Church’s second annual Blockbuster Faith teaching series suggests we could be if we search for God’s truth on film.
Last year, Destination gained attention from Time Out Chicago magazine for its first Blockbuster Faith series. The article suggested that “If Jesus were around today, he might choose to be a film director instead of a carpenter.” The focus of the article as well as the series is the power of stories. We relate to stories, we tell stories to relate to others; Jesus did the same thing. Jesus taught about Truth and Heaven and other difficult topics using parables, so people could understand, could relate. The Bible tells the story of the world as it plays out like a novel or a play, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. These days, we relate to movies.
Destination’s second go of the Blockbuster Faith series begins this summer, June 19th. You can review the Time Out article at the following url: http://timeoutchicago.com/arts-culture/museums/85657/mass-medium
Jake Malooney, the writer of the article, uses the image below to illustrate the idea that Jesus is not an outdated figure of history captured in a centuries old painting, but rather a current figure still making history and influencing the well-known characters seated around him.
